AVIAN INFLUENZA IN SOUTH KOREA
Since 2 April 2008 over 50 cases of the avian influenza (bird flu) have been found in poultry in South Korea. The South Korean authorities confirm that no humans have contracted the virus.
The authorities consider the current outbreak serious because of its geographical spread and the number of cases found. The latest case was found in Gangnam in the Southern part of Seoul. The H5N1 virus which can be deadly to humans have been found in a range of locations.
The Korean authorities have taken a number of steps to get control of the outbreak. They have experience with reducing the reach of contamination from earlier outbreaks of the avian flu in 2003 and 2006 where they successfully managed to stop spread of the virus.
The Korean authorities are closely monitoring for bird flu infections in humans and state that the risk of humans contracting the flu remains low.
